Ihly Industries, Inc. brings another innovation to the Packaging Industry. The unique RF-2400 Bottom Reformer/Reprofiler was designed for thinner, down-gauged beer containers. With the requirement for container growth not to exceed .050" (1.27mm) after pasteurization, the residual growth became critical. With several approaches taken, one for inside reforming and another for outside reprofiling, and if required the RF-2400 can perform both simultaneously. The 24-station Reformer is capable of speeds consistent with modern lines. This capability is gained by the innovative double eccentric action of the linkage supporting and positioning the Inside Forming Tool. The container has been previously loaded onto the Pressure Nose by the Infeed Turret. It is clamped into place by the Clamp Plate Assembly, and positioned onto the Pressure Nose allowing the Inside Tool to reform the bottom edge of the Chime Wall. Through a cam action, the Inside Tool is brought, in a straight line, down to that portion of the dome of the container. The container is rotated about its axis and the Inside Tool moves to a predetermined position reforming the Chime Wall as required. Each station also has the capability to utilize two Outside Rolls per station. These are cam actuated into position and are placed on either side of the positioned Inside Roll. They are quickly adjusted to the optimum Reprofiling position to the Nose Wall through an eccentric cam follower. At discharge, all tooling moves back to a neutral position. Any time there is a "no-can" situation, the tooling maintains a clearance position to the Pressure Nose. Change parts for a different dome configuration are simplified. There is the shape of the Pressure Nose (4-bolts), the diameter and profile of the Inside Tool (1-bolt), and the Outside Tools (2-bolts). These are quickly and conveniently changed. Once these have been mounted, no other adjustments are required for the specific container. The RF-2400 can be placed at the end of the manufacturing line. It has only a 5' x 5' (1524mm x 1524mm) footprint and has no air requirements other than activate the can release into the Infeed Turret. It is totally enclosed in a soundproof enclosure and is fitted with a PanelMate 1770 Graphic Operator Station. This allows the selection of a sequential can sample, single station testing, feedrate adjustment, spindle and turret speed adjustment, production time and count data, and standard machine control functions. These are all controlled through the Allen Bradley SLC 5/03 Programmable Controller. The programmable inverters provide adjustable speed, acceleration, and dynamic braking. Timing belts ensure synchronized drives of all functions, low noise levels, and minimum maintenance. With the advent of much thinner plate, not only for beer, but also for the future beverage containers. Reforming will become even more prevalent and necessary. The RF-2400 has proven, through a number of tests with a variety of samples, its capability to hold residual growth to .002" to .012" (0.05mm to 0.3mm), and increasing the buckle strength up to 25% by utilizing the Inside Tool only.
